ryan's story.

born on an early september morning to a korean mother and an irish-american father, ryan parkman grew up in a rather desolate area in new york, just outside the major city. he was surrounded by family turmoil, allegations spun left and right about his mother leaving him for another man, but she lost her battle to an aggressive brain tumor before they could clear up the potential case. however, when they heard about his mother reanimating and taking on a zombie-like state after her death, resulting in the near collapse of the hospital where she died, it ignited severe panic within him and his father. in a desperate attempt to flee the town that appeared to have its inhabitants change to this same state week after week, ryan’s father packed him up in the car and attempted to drive him out of the city to protect his son. but they didn’t get far; about thirty miles out of the city, the car broke down, and in his last effort to protect his son, he leaves the car, attempting to fight the walkers that surrounded them, but he never returned. about 24 hours following the attack, a group of survivors find a traumatized, starving, and shaking sixteen-year-old ryan in the trunk of the car, taking him to a nearby church where they made a makeshift camp.they decide to embark on a rather perilous journey to DC. after being chased out of an abandoned community college by a group called the savages, resulting in the death of his childhood best friend and history teacher from high school, they decide that they can’t really hunker down anywhere and continue to DC on foot, with little stops on the way.after getting in a skirmish with a rather testy group of walkers, they lose their map, so they need to rely on their expert tracker, alexis, who has essentially had the way memorized from the very start, to get them there safely. but they never make it to DC; instead, they find themselves out in the plains of virginia, where they meet up with a stranger named andy from the saviors camp who is initially out on his own, acting as a spy to gain information about the saviors and their next targets, as well as any of negan’s plans. after about a week of thinking, ryan’s group agrees to attack one of the saviors’ outposts, meeting up with andy whenever he can slip away from the sanctuary. however, andy is interrogated by negan on their way to the outpost where the group is planning to launch an attack, and attempts to kill him, allegedly knowing of his betrayal since the day the two of them met.andy essentially disappears for a few months after that, and the group manages to build their own miniature compound on an abandoned farm near a village. alexis falls ill with a severe flu, infecting many other members of the group, three of which are effectively killed by the illness. fearing that he’ll lose any more people, he sets off on his own to a nearby hospital where it has been alleged that not just essential medicines, but vaccines for yearly illnesses like the flu are still being stored. while at the hospital, however, ryan is interrogated by negan and a group of saviors, who order ryan to give them the medicine if he wants to get back to his camp alive. ryan makes an alternate plea, however, telling them that he’ll only take enough medicine and vaccines for each person to have one dose; the saviors could have the rest of it. negan allows it and lets him get away with his life, bringing the medicine back to his compound and essentially saving the lives of his friends in turn.only later through andy, who still managed to spy on the saviors from a distance, ryan learns that negan didn’t only take medicines for the flu and other over-the-counters from the hospital; he took quite a few serious drugs, some including steroids, and other essential vaccines to ensure his people had full immunity, using their medicine stocks as a way to lure strangers in and reinforce their numbers. the same day, ryan receives a written note from negan, and apparently a rare one at that: he wants to meet and discuss a possible treaty.at the meeting, negan proposes something that ryan doesn’t like, but really has no choice but to accept in order to, using the words from the other man, save as many lives as possible: they’ll stay to the south of the sanctuary, no more than 30 kilometers past the open field that is a few miles out from the sanctuary, while the saviors stay to the north of that line. using the maps they’ve developed over the months, the group realizes that negan’s tactic was devised to keep his group away from buildings that were most likely to carry medical supplies and food, as well as all of the other communities that the saviors were terrorizing, which they learned through andy. however, one of the only communities that appeared to be on their side of the border was called alexandria; at that point the group figured they should go and try to contact them. the journey takes two days, but they run into aaron, who claims to be an alexandrian out on a scouting mission. they agree to go with him, with some skepticism, but it is erased when they finally come into contact with the massive metal gates.once there, they meet rick (this happens after the death of deanna), claiming they wish to discuss business in dealing with the saviors. andy is there to tell his story, informing the alexandrians of how negan killed his father, how he had been spying on them ever since, gaining their deepest secrets and information and finally meeting negan after several missions to different outposts. he discussed how his chance to get close to negan were thwarted right from the beginning, how the man knew he was a traitor to begin with, how he was exiled, but refused to back down, continuing to spy and gain information from outside the sanctuary’s borders. ryan explains the treaty that the saviors supposedly made with him, and from there, tensions between alexandria and the saviors really start to kick off.when the group begins their mission to hilltop, the treaty is still valid, which explains why the saviors didn’t go to alexandria to confront rick to begin with. negan knew about ryan’s group and alexandria teaming up to learn more about them and hopefully expose them later, likely through dwight, and unbeknownst to the group on the way to hilltop, they had crossed the border, and were rather deep in savior territory by the time they were found (hilltop was on savior territory according to the map given to ryan after the treaty was signed). after negan kills abraham and glenn, every member of ryan’s group was captured along with daryl to go to the sanctuary prison. ryan, being the only member of his group to not to go to the hilltop, suffered weeks of immense guilt, blaming himself for abraham and glenn’s deaths and for the capture of daryl and the other members of his group. with that guilt transforming into sheer rage, he and andy attempt to attack the sanctuary alone, but they’re both captured and forced to watch savior guards beat the rest of their group to death. so full of his anger and grief ryan was that he struck out, stealing the beretta of a guard and gunning down everyone around them in sight. shots begin to fire, and andy is badly wounded on his shoulder. negan is the only one left standing, and on their way to the woods to hide, a single gunshot is all that is needed to prove what happened: negan took out the last person who he figured could help them defeat the saviors, the last person on their side who had any vital information, the person who had become not just a friend to him, but like a brother. andy was dead, and ryan figured that he would never be able to forgive himself.ryan, as the sole survivor of his group, formally joins the alexandrian ranks and helps defeat the saviors, his grief and fury fueling each and every move, his desire for revenge against the man who took everything from him adding to that fury. when the war is won, ryan feels like he can be at peace, even if negan is kept alive. however, he does manage to keep it a secret that he agrees with maggie, daryl, and jesus that rick shouldn’t have kept negan alive. thankfully, he knows what a desire and thirst for revenge can do to him, so he avoids letting his emotions take over him like that at any cost.

matthew's story.

matthew o’neill was born on november 27, 1998 to eliza trahan and joseph o’neill in an upper-class military family just south of los angeles, california. while joseph’s first wife was suffering from a brain tumor in the hospital, in his grief, he began to see eliza behind her back. eliza’s pregnancy with matthew was unplanned, but after joseph’s wife succumbed to her illness, the two got married and had their baby boy together. but their rough start caused problems in their relationship, and the two divorced when matthew was three years old. eliza re-married when he was five, and she gave birth to two other baby boys, brian in april of 2003 and zach in december 2005.the only thing matthew knew at this young age, besides constant bickering back and forth between parents, was his wealth. he knew he was different than other kids due to his economic background, and he had privileges that many others in his community didn’t. he always had a kinder side to him, and wanted to contribute to those less fortunate than him, but due to his family’s uptight nature, he was always coached into behaving properly, not paying attention to those less privileged than him. this caused him to develop somewhat of an arrogant and finicky side, developing strong preferences when he was young and refusing to go anywhere near anything that he was disinterested in.when the outbreak began, the family was certain that they were safe, their home located in a gated community of several upscale homes where everybody knew each other and had been living there for several years at a time. tensions between the neighborhood and hostile outside groups grew to the point of the locals receiving messages akin to bomb threats, and the moment they finally heard those shots being fired, on a day they all least expected, eliza took her family, minus her stepdaughter katie, who was a recent new mom to a daughter she named emily, due to her disappearing with her young child after the neighborhood bombing, and left the neighborhood unscathed. from here, they learned to survive on the road, the whole family unused to these new circumstances. there was constant bickering and flailing to save each other when the going got rough, the family clearly having a difficult time adapting even when they had each other.once the group reached new mexico, they found an abandoned college at the very top of a hill, one very difficult for walkers to reach. as soon as they cleared out all the buildings, they made a home of the place, bedding down in the dorms, starting a farm, and building strong wire gates around the facilities. thanks to matthew's diplomacy, the neighborhood group and a new group that had been there before were able to work out somewhat of a peace treaty, which involved members of each group spending a couple days with members of the others in their part of the school. zach and matthew's father were two of the first to be integrated into the other group, but things took a turn for the worse when a flu that had been spreading among the other group claimed the life of his younger half-brother zach in the middle of the night. the zombified boy bit matthew’s father, joseph, causing him to bleed out and turn, and on that same evening, the other group unleashed what looked as though to be an army of walkers on where matthew's group was staying. the young man was able to put the pieces together, and while they fought off the walkers, all of which were victims of the flu outbreak, matthew managed to shoot down and kill the leader of the other group, and in his final moments, he confessed that his plan was to expose as many people in his group as possible to the flu in an attempt to kill them before unleashing the walker army, but zach's unprepared-for death was the catalyst for a much earlier attack. most of the people living at the college and from the enemy group ended up dead, either shot to death or killed by walkers. a few days after escaping with his mother and brian, eliza succumbed to a walker bite in her side that she had been hiding, and she shoots herself in the head with her sons by her side.the demoralized matthew and brian come across signs to a large farm in north texas, and matthew has this gnawing suspicion that this could both be a safe haven for him and that katie could potentially be there with her young daughter. they even find a notecard with emily’s handwriting on it buried in the dirt beneath one of the closest signs. once they arrive, however, the place is overrun with walkers, signs of fire and explosive damage all over the property. when the stepbrothers investigate, they find an older farmer on a decky overhang looking over where he must have kept animals, but instead of there being any cows or pigs, the fenced-in area is full of walkers. when explaining that they’re looking for katie, the farmer looks lost, taken aback, and he is eager to tell his story, of how he took a liking to katie and her young daughter, and how they were both too good for such a dark world. he gestures to the ground where the walkers are congregating, and matthew sees bones, several ribs, some longer and bigger than other, a severed jawbone that was the same shape as katie’s, and a tiny skull that looked like it had once belonged to a baby. matthew barely hears the old farmer talk about how there’s nothing left in this world due to the disbelief and grief and anger that numbed him over as he put the pieces together, before collapsing in grief. his cries only grow louder as he watches the farmer plunge himself into the congregation of walkers, knowing full well that he’d soon end up just like his half-sister and niece. later he’d realize that it was likely the farmer or the community itself deciding that it should put down its most meaningful members, likely most of them mothers, children, and babies, believing they were not deserving of what the world was currently giving them, and thinking that them dying and ascending to another life would be better for them in the long run than to live in a world that would almost certainly kill them or give them nothing in return for their hardships.exhausted and grieving, the stepbrothers end up in north texas when they’re ambushed by another enemy group, the leader admitting his ties with the one that ambushed them at the college, and they kidnap brian. as they drive away, matthew notices the tennessee license plate, and notes the number on it. as he tracks where the car went, he notices a bunch of other cars along the way that have the same license plate number: SCION84. on the right track, he finds the prison where brian is being held captive. when he arrives, he states that he comes in peace, and just wants his brother back. Interested in a trade, their leader proposes it, and as soon as they have a date set, the two meet in private, but the leader of the group is being guarded by sentries from every corner. as a trade for brian, the leader requests a bag of supplies, so matthew gives it to him. but in order to protect it, brian protests, fighting back with his words against the leader of a group. one of the sentries ended up shooting down brian in front of matthew, and in a fit of rage, the young man shoots the leader of the facility, right in the head, before taking cover from the raining bullets. he can’t save the bag of supplies or collect his brother’s body, so he’s forced to leave, but not before being shot in the shoulder in the process.the wounded matthew travels on foot for days, most of the cars he finds not having enough gas in them to take him a considerable distance. after about a week of little to no food or water, he collapses from pain and exhaustion. when he wakes from his coma, he finds that he’s been brought to a community known as the kingdom, and he’s surprised to know that he’d come as far east as virginia. as he heals from his wounds, he learns to fight for the kingdom alongside hilltop and alexandria during the savior war. after negan’s defeat, he decides to move to alexandria, considering it to be the place that he’d be the happiest, and wanting to protect it due to it seeming like the best place to begin bringing the past back to the future.matthew is very stealthy, flexible, resourceful, and quick on his feet. while at the college, he learned a set of martial arts skills from some of the people they were staying with from their old neighborhood, and developed a special, easily-maneuverable outfit of all-black, including a hood and a black mask to cover his face so all that can be seen are his eyes. he is very good at hiding himself and people he’s with and keeping them from being found out. he is also trained in hand-in-hand combat, knows how to use both hand guns and automatic rifles, and built himself a lightweight double-bladed axe with his previous training in handiwork he learned from his father. he is also incredibly strong, demonstrated by his ability to lift a fallen tree branch all by himself during the storm that flooded alexandria, all so the medical team could enter the otherwise blocked infirmary to get the materials they need to treat wounded patients.
